Start to finish

We often start doing so many things in our life without really caring to finish them. Be it a project, a painting, a novel, learning something new or anything else. Whenever it takes a lot of time to finish, we tend to back out. When we start, we feel so inspired and excited. But with time, we lose all the excitements. We shred all the fundamental inspirations gradually on the way.

If only we were persistent to continue till the end then we could have something real in our hand. Continuity is a really important factor in our life. In order to achieve anything real, we must continue to finish whatever we start.

This attitude of backing out will lead us to nowhere. With this attitude, we will never be able to take charge of our life. It will result in surrendering our life to someone else, who can take charge of it.

If we believe in the vision, then we fight it, fix it and finish it.

We can create a habit of setting small immediate milestones to deal with this attitude. We can call them virtual endings. These endings are not real. They are just serving the purpose of pushing us forward towards our vision.

Let’s take a simple example.

Suppose we want to build a habit of exercising. We want to be healthy and fit.

Before starting whimsically, let’s set a vision first. It will be our actual endpoint. After reaching this actual endpoint we will decide if we want to continue or not. Not before that.

So for our getting fit vision, let’s find someone who we think we want to be when we become fit. Our fit version will look exactly like that as per our imagination. With the help of the internet, we can find that person. Or we can choose someone from our knowledge. That someone is our example, and matching us with that example is our vision.

Now to reach our vision, we will set an immediate endpoint. A virtual ending. It should be simple, feasible and immediate.

We can set the endpoint like doing exercise for the next three days consistently. By doing so, we would be able to achieve something immediately. It will boost our confidence to pursue further immediate endpoints.

When we successfully exercise for three days, we will then set another immediate endpoint for the next three days, and repeat the process.

We will use our confidence from winning these battles to face the war.

We will truly have to believe that our next virtual endpoint is the final endpoint. That is why we are calling them virtual endpoints. We will have to send this belief to our brain. Or else the brain will persuade us to escape.

Initially, it will be tough for us to adapt to this way of thinking. But if we can practice this process with persistence it will become organic.

If we fail on some endpoints on the way, it’s okay. We should keep moving. Going forward towards the vision is important.

Let’s change our attitude of escaping to finish whatever we will start next.
