REIT or Real Estate Investment Trust are those companies that usually invest in different types of real estate properties like offices, apartment buildings, warehouses, hospitals, shopping centres etc and generate revenue from there.
These REIT companies identify good real estate properties in several prime locations, in most cases commercial real estate properties and take leases or even buy those properties if possible. Then they develop those properties to put up for rent. Their primary income comes from the rents of all those real estate properties.
Only three REIT companies are currently listed in the stock market of India.
